Space Maintainers

Space maintainers in pediatric dental patients are devices that are used to hold open the space left by a missing primary (baby) tooth. They are typically used when a primary tooth is lost prematurely due to injury, decay, or extraction.

The main purpose of space maintainers is to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting into the empty space, which can cause problems with bite and alignment. They can also help to preserve the space for the permanent tooth to come in correctly.

There are several types of space maintainers, including:

  1. Fixed space maintainers: These are cemented to the remaining teeth and are not removable by the patient.

  2. Removable space maintainers: These can be taken out by the patient and are typically used when a primary tooth is lost in the front of the mouth.

  3. Lingual arch space maintainers: These are used to maintain the space of multiple missing teeth on the lower arch.

The procedure for placing a space maintainer is typically quick and easy, and it can be done in one visit to the dental office. The child will need to follow certain post-operative instructions to ensure proper healing and care for the device, such as avoiding hard or sticky foods, cleaning the device as directed, and attending regular follow-up appointments with the dentist.

It is important to note that space maintainers are not appropriate for all pediatric dental patients, and it is best to consult with a pediatric dentist or a top-rated child dentist in Chandigarh, such as Dr. Sandhu at Tricity Smiles Dentistry, to determine if a space maintainer is the best option for your child.

How do space maintainers help?

They maintain the space left open by premature tooth loss so that permanent teeth can erupt properly. Without space maintainers, permanent teeth can form poorly. Teeth adjacent to the space might shift into the empty space, which can spur orthodontic issues like teeth crowding.

What are different types of space maintainers?

  • Band and loop type

  • Distal shoe

  • Trans palatal

  • Lingual arch

What are space maintainers made of?

Most are made of stainless steel while others are made of acrylic. Fixed space maintainers are attached with dental cement to the teeth adjacent to the gap. There are unilateral and bilateral space maintainers, the first fitting on one side and the second fixed on both sides of the space. Dr. Sandhu will recommend a space maintainer on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the number and location of missing teeth.

How to care for your space maintainers?

If your child needs a space maintainer, it’s important to ensure that he or she is practicing good oral hygiene in order to keep the teeth and the appliance in good shape. We recommend that your child avoids sugary foods, chewing gum, and resists the urge to mess with the device as this can hinder its effectiveness.
